Three years ago, Chris Malveaux was working in his first season as an assistant on the McNeese State University Cowgirls' softball team. Malveaux recently moved up, being named the successor to previous Head Coach Scott Eastman.
Although Malveaux has never been a college head coach, he does have quite a bit of experience coaching softball. He spent three years as an assistant coach for the McNeese softball team, all under Eastman. Prior to that, he worked as Texas A&M's softball team's equipment manager. Also, he managed a travel team while in College Station, Texas. He also spent time coaching at summer camps at Texas A&M. Malveaux is 27 years old and graduated from Texas A&M in December 2001.
Malveaux feels that there are a lot of qualities he brings to the softball team. He says that being able to communicate with the players is something he is good at doing. He also points out that he knows how to get certain points across and is able to teach certain skills. Malveaux mentioned that it is important that he shares the same type of drive as the players on the softball team to get things done and work hard.
Ready for the softball season to start Malveaux does have a few goals in mind for the season.
"One is to win conference, and that's our first goal, to make a run at the conference championship. Then, postseason and going on to regionals. If you are able to do that, you are able to set yourself apart from some of the other teams," said Malveaux.
Coming off of a 19-41 season, it is obvious that there are a few things that will need to be changed or improved on this season.
"One thing hurting in the past is hitting, and we've made some changes," said Malveaux. "One of the strengths in the past was pitching. We have a pretty strong pitching staff. It has always kept us in games and kept games close."
The McNeese softball season will begin in the spring.
