With football season coming to a close, it is now time for the season that the majority of the student body is not aware exists: basketball season. With thousands showing up for the football games, one must wonder where all of the sports fans go when basketball begins.
After football season, the stands empty, the campers leave, and fans go into hibernation mode. I have never seen a camper outside Burton Coliseum for a basketball game, nor have I seen anyone covered in blue and gold paint for one. The handful of fans I have seen normally have a dazed look and clap in random intervals. Therefore, I find it necessary to send a request to all of the McNeese football fans to take a trip over to the coliseum and see if you like basketball.
For the uninitiated, basketball consists of two teams of five players, with each team's trying to make a round ball go inside of a metal ring 10 feet in the air with a net dangling from it. You may remember Michael Jordan playing this sport in what is known as the National Basketball Association, or NBA for short. Shaquille O' Neil also plays basketball when he is not recording rap albums or making video games like "Shaq Fu."
The fact that most of the games are during the week and some students like to study for classes can create some problems. However, the six fans that are in attendance at the games do not make too much noise, so bringing your homework with you is not as absurd as it may seem. Also, I am sure that the local 24-hour diner will be happy to sell you coffee for the long nights of cramming after the games.
For all of you cheapskates, the games are free just like the football games. So, if you can talk a significant other into going with you to a game on a date, you can get off pretty easy. The make-out section is pretty much the entire upper level since no one will be there anyway.
Although keeping a considerable distance from that horrible buzzer inside Burton Coliseum is always a good idea, both the men's and women's basketball teams need your support just as much as the football team. So stop crying that football season is over and go support some of McNeese's other sports teams in a nice, air-conditioned arena. It is not like you have anything else to do.
