For thirteen years McNeese has offered the opportunity for anyone in our area to become more culturally diversified with the music, art, and lecture series called Banners.
The 2005 Banners series establishes one of the best varieties of music and lectures that Banners has ever offered. With events happening every week (and always free for McNeese students) there is plenty of opportunity to culture yourself with the help of individuals that are both fluent and greatly respected in their crafts.
The Love Songs of Lori Laitman
Monday Feb. 14, 8 p.m.
F.G. Bulber Auditorium
Ms. Laitman is a leading composer of art songs and has won various awards for her musical settings of high quality literature. This Valentine's Day evening program will include music and poems by Emily Dickinson, Dana Gioia (also featured in the 2005 Banners), and McNeese English Department head John Wood's On A Photograph, which was composed especially for this event.
Moscow Circus and Russian Folk Fair
Sunday Feb. 20, 3 p.m.
Rosa Hart Theatre at the Lake Charles Civic Center $10 with McNeese ID
A Russian Winter's Tale is based on centuries old Russian traditions and fables. Including 25 Russian folk musicians, singers, dancers, human puppets and contortionists, this circus experience is far from Barnum and Bailey's.
Bobby Sanabria and Quarteto Ache
Friday Feb. 25, 7:30 p.m. F.G. Bulber Auditorium
Bobby Sanabria is a renowned Afro-cuban percussionist, arranger, composer, recording artist and educator. Schooled at Boston's highly prestigious Berklee College of Music, Sanabria has performed with jazz and Latin legends such as Tito Puente and Dizzy Gillespie. He and his quartet will be playing with McNeese's Jazz Ensemble for this night of jazz.
Douglas Brinkley. Lecture
Monday Feb. 28, 8 p.m. Stokes Auditorium at Hardtner Hall
Free admission
For those of you still a little bitter about the war in Iraq, Dr. Brinkley will discuss the "Legacy of Vietnam" and compare Iraq to the situations involved in Vietnam. He will also discuss his most recent book, "Tour of Duty: John Kerry and the Vietnam War."
